THE WEST CHESHIRE LEAGUE

 

Events and Happenings

 

1892

League formed under original name of Wirral District A.F.L

 

1893

Number of clubs doubles to twenty, prompting the formation of Div 2

 

1895

Amalgamated with Liverpool League (but lasted only two seasons)

 

1899

Resignation of Caergwrle Wanderers refused. Reason they had played all their                                                                      

home games but none away

 

1901

League forms Third Division even though Div 1 has only six teams

 

1904

Division Three so large that North & South sections are formed

 

1906

Name changed to West Cheshire League

 

1909

900 handbooks printed at a cost of 10s 6d

 

1911

First record of player being excluded from league for misconduct

 

1919

League reconstituted with ten clubs following the war

 

1923

Division two abandoned, Division one has sixteen teams

 

1926

Disorderly behavior by spectators addressed at League AGM

 

1930

League amalgamate with the Welsh National League and becomes known as the  

Football Combination

 

1934

West Cheshire League reformed

 

 

1946

League reformed after 2nd World War. Entrance fee one guinea and subscription of  

two guineas levied

 

1947

Not one player reported for misconduct during the season.

 

1951

Fixtures compiled by League Secretary for the first time

 

1952

Cammell Laird decide players are not good enough for Division One and request

Division Two status

 

1957

Neutral linesman introduced for Division One and Pyke Cup games

 

1962

West Cheshire ticket scheme comes into operation

 

1967

Substitutes used for the first time in league games

 

1971

Chester “A” resign following in the footsteps of Everton, Liverpool and Tranmere

who had left the league some seasons earlier

 

1975

Cammell Laird win the first of five successive league titles

 

1977

Red and Yellow cards used for the first time.  League sponsored for the first time by 

NU FRONTS

 

1984

Chester College becomes the first recipient of the George Law Cup, which is

presented for the club with the best discipline record

 

1985

First Division reduced to the present level of sixteen clubs

 

1987

Sponsorship with Tetley Walker commences

 

1988

League executive act to eradicate foul and abusive language

 

1990

Bill Weight Trophy introduced with the proceeds going to Charity Automatic

promotion and relegation introduced

 

1991

League celebrates its Centenary

 

1998

Third Division formed for the first time this century

 

1999

League are selected to represent in the UEFA Regions Cup

 

2000

Life Member Syd Breeton sadly dies at the age of 93.  League season extended

because of one of the worst winters in memory

 

League joins the World Wide Web with their own web site.  Stork Res. resign during the season
